Thank you to Chantel Peplinski, Team Lead, Communications at CanLII for this article.
As CanLII approaches its 25th anniversary next year, CanLII Connects has solidified its place as a vital resource for the Canadian legal community. Since its launch in 2014, the platform has become a dedicated space where lawyers, academics, law students, and legal publishers share valuable insights with both legal professionals and the public.
At the heart of the platform is a database of case commentaries and case summaries contributed by the legal community. It brings together legal minds to engage in discussions, share perspectives, and enhance understanding of legal decisions. As with CanLII.org, visitors can search and view all posted content on CanLII Connects free of charge. Content posted on Connects can also be searched for via the CanLII search engine or via the Connects tab located on case document pages on CanLII. This tab is particularly useful if you are reading a case and want to go deeper, as it lets you instantly check if anyone has published an opinion, commentary, or analysis on the decision. For many users, this ability to immediately see if someone is talking about a case is the most valuable part of the entire process.
To ensure the quality of the content, CanLII Connects maintains a community of registered members. Only these registered members are permitted to submit new content, comment on existing entries, or upvote commentaries and summaries. The registration process involves a review to confirm an individual’s capacity to analyze and comment on the law, thereby upholding the platform’s standard of professional quality.
